What is fabric weight (GSM) and why does it matter in the event industry?

What is fabric weight, how to choose the best one, and what is the typical GSM of event products? We answer these and other questions in our latest post.

Our clients often ask about material quality. Is fabric weight one of the factors that define quality? In today’s post, we will explain what this term means and how to apply it in practice.

What is fabric weight – definition and abbreviation?

Fabric weight is the mass of a material over a specific surface area. To ensure a proper comparison, grams and square meters are used as the standard units. Consequently, fabric weight is the weight of one square meter (1 m²) of material expressed in grams. It is also customary to use the abbreviation GSM (grams per square meter) or g/m².

Which fabric weight is the best?

As you might easily guess, a higher fabric weight means heavier fibers and a greater weight per square meter. But does a heavier material always mean a better one? In the event industry, the answer is not that simple. You need to balance two, or even three, conflicting values: durability, weight, and price.

Event products must be durable enough to withstand time, weather conditions, and human activity :). At the same time, their standout feature should be lightness, allowing for easy transport from place to place. As a result, the GSM cannot be so low that the product becomes fragile, nor so high that it makes transport difficult.

It is also important to remember that materials that are too heavy may not fit as well on structures like tent frames. In some cases, extreme lightness is actually a requirement- for example, to allow the print to show through on the other side. This primarily applies to event flags, which are printed on one side, but thanks to the lightweight fabric, the print remains visible on the reverse.

The third variable is price. Of course, there are materials on the market that perfectly meet the first two criteria. These include both exclusive natural fabrics – like silk – and highly advanced synthetic materials. Unfortunately, their cost usually far exceeds what most clients are willing to spend on promotional products.

Therefore, there is no universal answer to the question of which fabric weight is best. One thing is certain, however: in the event industry, polyesters and PVC-coated materials reign supreme, while nylons, polyester blends, and acrylics are less common.

What is the typical weight for promotional product materials?

Here are the most common fabric weights (GSM) used for various promotional products:

Promotional tents – 180 g/m² – 300 g/m² (polyester, acrylic, PVC-coated polyester)

Inflatable advertising – 180 g/m² – 350 g/m² (polyester, PVC-coated polyester)

Deck chairs (Sling chairs) – 180 – 270 g/m² (polyester)

Advertising flags – 100 – 150 g/m² (polyester)
